Lars Kremer (New York) (see images below)

Lars Kremer received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts and his Master of Fine Arts from the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University. He also attended the Tyler School of Art in Rome as part of the Temple University Abroad Program. He has exhibited at the Delaware and UCLA Art Museums. His work is also included in the collection of the Denver Art Museum.

Kremer’s Specimen Series stretches the notion of photography and represents an investigation into the meaning of portraiture. The images are high resolution, 1016 dpi, and are printed using LVT technology onto Kodak film, resulting in what amounts to an 8” x 10” photographic slide. They are displayed in light box frames, usually with a magnifying loupe to allow further exploration of the many minute figurative elements composing the luminous insect.

This work is first valued as a traditional specimen display. We marvel at the wondrous form and dazzling color. We then begin to appreciate its size and seek a closer look at this exotic creature. Upon closer inspection, we are startled to recognize the human compositional character of this strange life form. We quickly start to draw both physical and psychological parallels between man and beast. And it’s at this very moment when the work comes alive and begins to flutter.

Kremer’s work rekindles our deep appreciation for form and heightens our sensitivity to the fractalized and self-referential structure of the universe. But it also sparks our literary imagination, where the qualities and spirit of man and animal commingle in common culture. We seek out characters, we study their gestures, we decide their meaning, and then we ask, “What specimen am I.”
