Leah Tinari (New York) (see images below)
Leah Tinari received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998. During this time, she spent a semester at the Instituto de San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. She has exhibited in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and most recently at Real Art Ways in Hartford. She has been featured in numerous publications including NY ARTS, The New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, Spin, Lucky, and Elle. She is a rocket ship, so climb aboard and enjoy the ride.
Tinari works in gouache and acrylic on both paper and canvas. She works from photographs taken mostly of family and friends. She is fascinated by the abstract qualities of corrupted compositions. Blurred lighting, imposing shadows, cropped imagery, and spatial distortions are the lifeblood of Tinari’s work. These imperfections parallel the mistake-filled world that we inhabit on a daily basis. It’s what makes Tinari’s work more real than real. So, even though we may not personally know the characters of her compositions, we can immediately identify with them. Embarrassing but endearing expressions, awkward but profound poses, unthinking but warming moments, charged and stirring interactions all illustrate the truth of our complex human condition unceasingly filled with both beauty and fault.
Tinari’s work is gripping on another level as well. She plays with the richness and detail of the figure while selectively deleting the ground. This moves her work further toward abstraction and inherently forms worlds within worlds. The intricate patterns and colors in the positive space are elevated by the often blank canvas serving as negative space. However, even the negative space is energized by its striking form. The tension created through this dynamic relationship contributes to the feeling that there is much more to each compositional story than first meets the eye.
