Vaune Hatch (Connecticut) (see images below)

Vaune J. Hatch received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982 from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts with a double major in pre-med and art studio. She received her Master of Art Education in 1984 from the University of Hartford and her Master of Associated Medical Sciences in Biocommunication Arts in 1988 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Hatch worked from 1989-1993 as a medical illustrator at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Since then she has worked as a freelance medical artist. All the while, however, Hatch has had the longing to transform her past illustrations into profound compositions of abstract beauty.

With a knowing mind, Hatch preserved all her sketches from her many diverse illustration projects. In the mid to late 90’s, she began casually exploring the concept of drawing over selected sketches. She quickly became intrigued with the boundary between literalism and abstraction. The light and dark areas of the original sketches were the general guide for how much mark-making was needed. Spaces in the drawings were covered with a variety of marks: dots, bubbles, squiggles, lines, and a multiformity of designs. Hatch rotated some of the original sketches and occasionally combined more than one drawing. She desires to continue exploring this compositional margin by altering scales, adding subtle color, and combining disparate subject matter.

Hatch’s work highlights the self-referential quality that underlies much of nature. By manipulating the balance between fact and fiction, she is able to intuitively emphasize commonalities between the underlying subject matter and other natural forms. Amazingly, she even manages to subconsciously draw parallels between natural and man-made worlds. This is certainly no small accomplishment.
