John Matt (Connecticut) (see images below)

Matt is an accomplished artist and teacher. He studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and Yale University School of Art and Architecture where he received his Bachelor and Master of Fine Art. He won third prize in the San Francisco Civic Center Plaza International Competition and won the Rome Prize Fellowship. He has taught at Yale University, Trinity College, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of Connecticut.

Music has always been an intrinsic source of inspiration in Matt’s art. When he creates he often imagines that he is sculpting in sound. The abstract “notes” of his vision are typically fleshed out in detailed drawings and then translated into the tactile language of line and shape, space and form, texture and color. In short, he composes three-dimensional symphonies.

The complexity of his musical vision was not always so polyphonic. When Matt first began to build sculptures, he only played one instrument at a time, so to speak. That is, he modeled in clay, carved in wood or stone, and cast in bronze via wax. Experiments in welding, brazing, and soldering added tonality to what were still rather simple songs.

That all changed one day in 1971 while working on a piece in his studio at the American Academy in Rome. He was suddenly struck by the desire to combine a variety of materials in a single form. Soon he was blending the seemingly disparate sounds of aluminum, wood, lead and Plexiglas into a beautiful contrapuntal unity. Matt’s multi-media sculptures represent hundreds and hundreds of hours of labor and great expense in acquiring, machining, and assembling his masterpieces. They are a true testament to his inspiration and dedication in sharing his vision.
